Transparency, as you have pointed out is one of the issues. IMHO, the more important issue is do we teach students to assess their own learning? How will students know? How will parents know? Forget about independent learning if this is not taught to students. It is an important skill for life. Unfortunately, this is still not prevalent in Singapore schools. The proof of it is that many schools still do not allow their students to bring home the marked examination scripts.</description>

  Yes, it is important for educators to be very clear about assessment requirements/standards and to be transparent when accounting to parents and students. As a teacher, I make it a point to remind students about expectations and I also share with them where marks are assigned to in the grading of maths exams.
